Civil War 150th Celebration Lecture: 'Civil War Personal Stories'

To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, the CWU Brooks Library has been selected as one of 50 libraries in the country to be awarded the exhibition "Civil War 150: Exploring the War and its Meaning Through the Words of Those Who Lived It." The exhibit will run through Monday, Nov. 19 and will be on display in the lobby of the James E. Brooks Library. It is free and open to the public.

The exhibition recounts the Civil War through letters, personal accounts and photographs to invite a better understanding of how families, soldiers, freedmen and presidents struggled to address democracy, citizenship, the human toll of civil war and the role of a president in wartime.

Two special lectures will be presented by distinguished and nationally recognized CWU authors.

Daniel Herman, History Department professor, will present "Civil War Personal Stories" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15. Mark Auslander, Anthropology and Museum Studies associate professor and Museum of Culture and Environment director, will present "Rose's Gamble: African Americans and the Civil War, in History and Memory" at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19. Both lectures will be held in Brooks Library Room 401 and are free, include refreshments and open to the public.

The exhibit was awarded to CWU by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the Library of America.
