Local Meats Field Day
Demand for sustainably raised meat and fiber is increasing. Consumers are demanding more information about where their food comes from and seeking out relationships with the people who grow it. Washington livestock producers of all shapes and sizes are invited to the Local Meats Field Day at the Windy N Ranch (www.windynranch.com) in Ellensburg on April 20th. The event, starting at 9:00AM and continuing through a free lamb chili lunch, ending around 1:00PM, will highlight practices successfully used by the Newhall Family in their efforts to become a fully certified organic farm with a variety of meats for direct marketing, including swine, beef, and lamb. Farmer-to-farmer education works, and participants will learn about the details of organic certification, innovative approaches to providing high-quality forage during seasons when it's not easily grown on pasture, and the Animal Welfare Approved program for certifying animal husbandry practices. Other topics to be covered include grazing after fire by Tip Hudson, regional WSU Extension range and livestock specialist, and direct marketing challenges by Colleen Donovan with WSU's Small Farms Program. Registration is not necessary, but RSVP by April 16 is requested in order to get a head count for food. Sponsors of the event include the Kittitas County Sheep Producers, Old Mill Country Store, and Windy N Ranch. To RSVP or to get more information, contact the WSU Kittitas County Extension office at 509-962-7507 or email@example.com.
