Upper County Sign-Up Day for Senior Citizen/Disabled Persons Property Tax Exemptions
Kittitas County Assessor, Marsha Weyand, announces that office personnel will be onsite at the Upper Kittitas County Senior Citizen Center on June 5th, 2013 from 10:00 to noon and after the lunch hour from 1:00 to 2:00. They will be there for a sign-up day to help seniors, disabled persons, and veterans with a 100% service-connected disability in need of property tax assistance apply for a new property tax exemption on their residence or to renew their annual application. Office personnel will help fill out the applications and answer any questions about the program.
This program exempts all excess levies and may exempt a portion of regular levies on a primary residence and up to five acres of land. Excess levies are approved by the voters and include school construction bonds, and maintenance and operation levies.
The Senior Citizen/Disabled Persons Property Tax Exemption program is available to those who meet all of the following qualifications: 1) be at least 61 years old on December 31 of the application year OR unable to work due to a physical disability, 2) own and live in their primary residence, and 3) whose household income is $35,000 or under per year. There were 701 property tax exemptions granted in Kittitas County in 2012 to qualified residents.
The Assessor Office personnel will travel to the upper county to make it convenient and to encourage those who think they might qualify apply for the exemption and those already on the program to renew their annual applications if they have not already done so this year. This is a chance for seniors to save a trip to the courthouse in Ellensburg and to save fuel expense!
Please note that identification and income documentation are required at the time of application, so anyone interested should call the Assessor's Office at either (509) 962-7501 or the upper county toll-free number 674-2584 to find out what information they are required to bring to the Senior Center.
