Open House for Kittitas Highway Improvements

Open House for Kittitas Highway Improvements
Kittitas County Public Works Department is holding an open house to discuss the Kittitas Highway Safety Improvement project on Wednesday, October 30, 2013. Persons can come anytime between 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. It will take place at the Kittitas Valley Event Center (Fairgrounds) in the Teanaway Hall, Ellensburg WA, 98926.
Persons attending will see the latest design, traffic information, and updates for phase 1 and phase 2 of this project.  The County Engineer, consultants from the firm J-U-B Engineers, Inc., and county staff will be at this open house to discuss this project and answer any questions attendees may have.

To ensure the completion of this important project, Kittitas County has fast tracked this project by splitting the construction into two phases.  The first phase of improvements are currently under construction and they include grinding and removing the old pavement surface, installing an engineered paving mat to minimize reflective cracking, and placing a new pavement overlay on the surface.  The existing road shoulders will not be affected by this phase of work.

The second phase improvements will be started in 2014 after the environmental review and permit process for bridge replacement and paved shoulder widening have been completed.  The second phase will include the remaining improvements that will make the roadway safer for motorists and bicyclists.

This project is being built in two phases because the County needed to spend slightly more than $1 million of federal transportation funds dedicated to this project in 2013 -- or the County would have lost these funds to a different project in the state.  Phase 1 improvements did not require the lengthy environmental review and permit process and therefore was ready to be constructed this year.  Phase 2 improvements are expected to have a completed design and all of the required permits approved by the first part of 2014.

WSDOT manages the distribution of federal funds to city and county transportation projects throughout the state.  They distribute in Kittitas County an average of $400,000 of federal transportation funds each year to be divided up for qualifying transportation projects.  A portion of these funds has been allocated to the Kittitas Highway project over the past several years, totaling slightly more than $2 million.  This project became fully funded after receiving U.S. Senator Patty Murray's support and getting placed in the 2009 and 2010 federal transportation budgets for a total of $2.28 million.

The Kittitas County Public Works Department is comprised of the Administrative; Engineering and Construction Management; Fleet, Road, and Bridge Maintenance Divisions.  Public Works is also the administrator of the County-wide Flood Control Zone District.  The department is committed to providing the residents, businesses, and visitors of Kittitas County with world-class infrastructure and engineering services, delivered in a timely and cost effective manner.

Persons needing accommodations to participate in any project activities or anyone wanting more information on these projects may contact the Kittitas County Public Works Department at 509-962-7523.  Project information is also provided on the County's website at the following link:
