Educational Event on Colon Health

Dr. Jamin Feng and physician assistant Andrew Schock of KVH Internal Medicine will provide a public presentation about colon health and cancer screening on March 10.  The presentation is sponsored by the KVH Cancer Survivors Support Group.

Colon or rectal cancer (colorectal cancer) is the third most common form of cancer diagnosed in the nation, and the fourth most common in Kittitas County.  Over the past ten years, there have been between 11 and 14 new diagnoses in Kittitas County each year.  These diagnoses have been divided almost evenly between men and women, though men generally have a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer.

On March 10, Dr. Feng and Andrew Schock will discuss and answer questions about colon cancer screening.  They will also discuss risk factors for the disease, which can include certain medical conditions like Type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, or a personal history of colorectal polyps.  Certain lifestyle choices can also place a person at higher risk for developing colorectal cancer.  Some of these lifestyle choices include a high intake of alcohol or red meat, smoking, or a lack of physical exercise.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for colorectal cancer beginning at age 50 using fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy.

The free presentation will be held in the upstairs conference room of KVH Hospital at noon on Monday, March 10. For more information about the event or the KVH Cancer Survivors Support Group, contact Karen Schock at (509) 962-7322.
