Get Intimate with the Shrub Steppe Field Trips

The 15th annual field trip series, Get Intimate with the Shrub-Steppe (GISS), continues on June 14 and every second Saturday from through August (July 12 and August 9), according to the event sponsor the nonprofit Kittitas Environmental Education Network.
The second of our four scheduled field trips for this year's GISS will start with Deborah Essman taking you birding at 7:30 AM. Deborah says, "Birding the Umtanum is amazing! You'll get to see not only shrub-steppe birds like spotted towhees, canyon wrens, and nesting prairie falcons, but also riparian-loving birds like yellow-breasted chats, lazuli buntings, black-headed grosbeaks and several species of warblers. It's a beautiful hike plus you'll learn how to identify many different species of birds and also explore why and how they live here."
Then, from 9 to noon, Paul James will introduce you aquatic biology whose "display and demonstration will be set up at the mouth of Umtanum Creek under the footbridge at the Umtanum Recreation site in the Yakima River Canyon. We will have live displays of Yakima River fish and aquatic invertebrates to view as well as "touch tanks" where many of the live aquatic animals can be handled and observed under microscopes. Kids should bring their wading shoes so they can help us catch crayfish and aquatic bugs for the touch tanks. Fly-fishers and fly-tyers will get to see the common types of insects that trout feed on in the river."
At 9 AM, Lixing Sun will introduce you to beavers. He says, "This 40-minute hike will begin where Umtanum Creek flows into the Yakima River. We will begin with short introduction before walking along the trail, with occasional stops to look for signs of beavers: tree stumps, beaver dams, ponds, beaver trails, beaver feeding sites, and beaver lodges. Please wear appropriate footwear, and if you bring small children, be sure that they stay in trail so as to avoid potential encounters with rattlesnakes."
At 10 AM, Robert Weaver will take you snake sneaking: "The hike will begin where Umtanum Creek flows into the Yakima River. We will begin with short introduction and then spend time walking along the trail, with occasional stops to spread out amongst the sagebrush to carefully search for snakes. Please wear appropriate footwear, and if you bring small children be sure to keep a careful eye on them. In past years we have encountered several species of snakes, including rattlesnakes. So I anticipate a successful search."
The field trips are geared for families and people of all ages and last about 50 minutes unless otherwise noted.
The field trips all will start near the foot-bridge at the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's Umtanum Recreation Site, 12 1/2 miles southeast of Ellensburg in the Yakima River Canyon, off state Route 821. Permits are required to park at the Umtanum Recreation Site (Fees: $5/vehicle). Field trips are subject to change, so please check the KEEN website for updates: http://kittitasee.net/
